Introduction to the Library

 

Nanhang Jincheng College Library, established in 2005, was originally located in Mingde Building. Construction of the new library started in 2008. On September 15th 2011, it was inaugurated for the students and faculty. The library features fluid lines and graceful style as a landmark on our campus. Covering 26,000 square meters of land, it enjoys good exposure with an open design and a flavour of elegance and simplicity with the colour of cold grey and white inside. Set off by green plants, the library appears to be peaceful yet vigorous, quiet yet passionate, providing a quiet environment for reading .

The library keeps a considerable collection of over 470,000 books in Chinese and 1,000 books in foreign languages, 8,000 bound periodicals, 800 periodicals as well as 80 newspapers. The collection is always growing in number and category. It is estimated that the total volumes currently amount to over 900,000. There are also electronic resources available, including Vip Chinese scientific and technological journals, Chinese e-books from Super Star Digital Library, New Oriental Multimedia Learning System, VOD (Video On Demand) System, and so on. Readers also maintain access to abundant Chinese and Western electronic resources and databases provided by NUAA Library — the parent library. Apart from an emphasis on computer science, electronic science, automation control and machinery manufacturing, the library is also meant for a wide range of subjects from engineering, science, management, and economics to law.

The library boasts a seating capacity of 3,500 people and 12 function areas, namely, 2 Information Desks, 4 Online Catalogue Terminals, 1 Science and Technology Books Reading Room, 1 Social Science Books Reading Rooms, 1 Electronic Reading Room, 1 Information Commons, 14 Seminar Rooms, and so on. Books are circulated in the whole library. As for the service of book borrowing and returning, a unified operation mode is applied. In addition to the WIFI-Service coverage, it is equipped with advanced central air-conditioning, fire fighting and safety monitoring systems. The 84 monitoring points are under intellectualized management.

The library functions as not only a centre for the storage and transmission of document information, but also an important place for students to cultivate their self-directed research through discussing and exchanging ideas.

Located right opposite the library entrance is the Conference Hall, which can hold 621 people. It serves as an important place for seminars and student activities. Also on 1/F, there is a Lecture Hall with a seating capacity of over 100 people. Simultaneous interpretation services are offered in the hall.

The Science and Technology Reading Room, located on the south side of 2/F, is shelved with various books on science and technology, covering mathematics, physics, industrial technology, aeronautics, astronautics, and so on. Over 30,000 kinds of books, nearly 100,000 volumes, are accessible to readers in this room of over 400 seats. Books can be checked out of the library.

The Electronic Reading Room, on the north side of 2/F, has 305 networked computers. Readers can surf the internet for information, send or receive e-mails, visit or download e-books, and use the attached disks. Based on the existing geographical features, the reading desks are designed into 3 distinct forms: wavy, round and straight. As such, the old dull style gives way to a fashionable taste, bringing very different visual experiences for all readers.

The Social Science Books Reading Room, on the south side of 3/F, houses social science books on philosophy, political science, law, economics and management. Collections in this reading room have reached over 28,000 kinds or 80,000 volumes. Books can be checked out of the library as well.

The Information Commons, on the north side of 3/F, is divided into 3 areas: Video Enjoyment Area, Multimedia Reading Area, and Music Enjoyment Area.

The Video Enjoyment Area is equipped with leisure chairs, 14 TV sets as well as 6 earphones for each TV set, which means that 6 users are able to watch programs at the same time. Besides, users can enjoy programs freely on Internet HD TV with the function of playback, through cooperation with China Telecom

The Multimedia Reading Area accommodates seating for 112 people, featuring a novel design of S type. The earphone on each computer enables users to visit the Multimedia Data Base and make full use of sound, video, foreign language, courseware and other resources.

The Music Enjoyment Area is round and stylish in appearance. Each of the 24 seats is provided with a high-fidelity headset and the Touch Screen VOD System. The latter boasts a collection of over 300,000 songs. For the convenience of readers, the seats are surrounded by bookshelves where books are displayed.

Apart from those three areas, the Information Commons is also decorated with 8 seminar rooms and one Retrieval Training Classroom for readers to conduct self-study, research and academic discussion.

Information Commons and Social Science Books Reading Room are interlinked at the back by a corridor with a modern coffee bar. . It is still under construction, but in the future, amid coffee and cakes, readers will be able to enjoy a complete relaxation both mentally and physically.

The Social Science Books Reading Room, on the south side of 4/F, provides enough space for over 500 readers. It receives nearly 97,000 volumes in over 32, 000 kinds, comprising mainly social science books (such as those on language, literature, art, history and biography) and comprehensive books (such as encyclopedias, dictionaries, and yearbooks). These collections are intended for use in the library as well as for circulation.

The Newspapers and Periodicals Reading Room, on the north side of 4/F, keeps over 80 currently issued newspapers, 800 currently issued periodicals and 6,500 bound periodicals. All the collections can be used in the library only and do not circulate. There are over 450 seats, sofas as well as round bookshelves with leisure magazines. In addition, 8 computers are available for readers who want to read e-newspapers and e-periodicals.

The corridors, on 4/F and 5/F, are known as the Communication Area. Here, readers can be active participants in academic exchanges while sitting comfortably on the sofas.

The Science and Technology Books Reading Room 2, on the south side of 5/F, is currently used as a self-study room that accommodates up to 400 people.

The library logo consists of two elements: one, in association with a seagull, symbolizes being aggressive in exploring life; two, taken from the school badge, represents books with wisdom. The two elements work together as a whole, implying that in reading books we become wise and in exploring life we fly high towards our dreams.
